Pedro Slim (Beirut, Lebanon, 1950), himself a passionate photographer based in Mexico City, is an international collector of vintage photographs which include early vanguards of the 20th century as well as contemporary photographers. They enhance the images of the sexualised human body and feature the concepts of hedonism, marginality and emancipation. So far, Slim’s substantial collection has been shown in Mexico (Museo de Arte Moderno) and Europe (Cobra Museum of Modern Art).

This new exhibition focuses on 14 (fourteen) women photographers of different generations. Some of them veterans, mostly renowned and still active, whose work has had a significant influence on our perception of visual culture worldwide. Mainly in urban contexts but also in rural everyday life. The exhibition includes 50 (fifty) photographs of women photographers: the  American-born artists Diane Arbus (1923 – 1971), Nan Goldin (1953), Arlene Gottfried (1950 – 2017), Jill Freedman (1939 – 2019), Lillian Bassman (1917 – 2012), Genevieve Naylor (1915 — 1989), Phyllis Galembo (1952), and Merry Alpern (1955); the Mexicans Graciela Iturbide (1942), Lola Álvarez Bravo (1907 – 1993), and Yolanda Andrade (1950); the Brazilian Claudia Andujar (1931), the Iranian Hoda Afshar (1983), and the Dutch
Diana Blok (1952).

The photographers in this exhibition are often interested in the documentary and anthropological dimension of printed images, but also in mythical or trivial references that challenge female stereotypes. However, they all share the idea that it is through physical contact, rather than analysis, that we understand and sympathise with other people. This explains why their portraits, or the situations they depict, show the subject as a personality, regardless of their social setting: even ordinary life is imbued with drama.
